Taking a Look at The New Deal - 1763 Words

The New Deal was one of the most influential government policies in American History, proposed by New Dealers led by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, one of the most legendary presidents in American history, famous for his leadership during two of the most disastrous events in the history: the Great Depression and World War II. As a controversial government policy, some historians argue that the New Deal was radical while others maintain that it was conservative. The New Deal was radical at its time, but from today’s point of view, it was still somewhat conservative. The New Deal was radical The New Deal was radical in that it greatly increased the power of the executive branch, greatly increased the federal budget, and started governmental interference of the economy. It gave FDR the power to regulate US banking system and business system. Its various programs directly provided help to the majority while creating a lot of jobs as well as housing for them. It set up the safety net for the majority of American people with policies such as Social Security. Banking and finance regulation The New Deal was economically radical; it gave the government a lot of power to regulate the banking system and finance system. The Glass-Steagall Banking Act of 1933 and the Emergency Banking Act of 1933 were among the first the New Deal policies. Both acts were aimed to regulate the banking system and to restore people’s faith in banks.
